Probably is as simple as who pays the most to be "interviewed" or to be the "main" or whatever speaker/presenter/panelist/etc.

Hey Derek, this was great. I chucked at this bit "I find this somewhere between funny and ridiculous. You end up having meetings and attending panels in spaces that, for the other 51 weeks of the year, are ski rental shops".

Derek, Glad you went as I told you...everyone needs to go once. I have gone several times but eventually could not stand it anymore. Sounds like you got there more rapidly. Other than the networking (same reason people go to some of the big tech conferences in the US) it has little to recommend it. But great article!
